House cleaning in France: how the 50% tax credit works in 2026

If you are living in France and paying for home cleaning, you may be leaving money on the table. Services provided at your home qualify for an income tax credit worth 50% of what you pay. The rule is generous, but it only applies inside a specific legal framework, and that framework is what most newcomers miss. Here is the complete picture, with the official figures.

The rule: 50% of what you spend, capped at 12,000 EUR per year

The personal services tax credit (credit d'impot services a la personne) equals 50% of the expenses you incur during the year, within an annual cap of 12,000 EUR. The maximum benefit is therefore 6,000 EUR per year for a household with no increase applied. These figures come from the French public administration portal service-public.gouv.fr, page updated on 15 April 2026.

The amount is computed automatically by the tax administration from what you declare, appears on your tax assessment notice, and leads to a refund of the tax benefit where applicable.

When the cap goes up

The 12,000 EUR cap can be raised by 1,500 EUR in three cases: per dependent child, per household member over 65, and per ascendant over 65. These increases add up, but the total cap cannot exceed 15,000 EUR.

  • First year you directly employ someone at home: the cap rises to 15,000 EUR, meaning a maximum benefit of 7,500 EUR, and up to 18,000 EUR once increases apply.
  • Disability situations: the cap goes up to 20,000 EUR, for a maximum benefit of 10,000 EUR.

What qualifies, and what does not

House cleaning falls under "entretien de la maison" (home upkeep), which is on the official list of services rendered at home that open the right to the tax credit. Regular cleaning, deep cleaning, floors and bathrooms all sit inside the scheme, provided the declaration conditions below are met.

Some activities have lower specific caps: 5,000 EUR for small gardening jobs, 3,000 EUR for IT assistance at home, 500 EUR for small DIY work.

Not every cleaning service is covered. Car washing is not on the list of personal services rendered at home, so it does not open the right to the tax credit, even when the wash happens in front of your building. Office and commercial premises cleaning belongs to a company's own accounting, not to the personal services tax credit. When in doubt about a specific service, the official list published by the administration is what counts.

Two valid setups: direct employment or a declared provider

This is the part that decides whether you get the credit or not. It applies in two cases only:

  • Direct employment: you employ the person working in your home yourself and declare them through Cesu (or Pajemploi for childcare). You are then a private employer.
  • Using a declared association, company or organisation registered for personal services. The professional or the structure carries the registration and issues you an annual tax certificate.

A cash payment with no declaration and no invoice sits outside the scheme entirely: no tax credit, and no protection if something goes wrong. It is a bad deal, financially included.

The immediate advance: stop waiting a year

Historically you had to pay the full amount and wait for the following year's tax settlement. The immediate advance mechanism removes that delay: the share matching the tax credit is deducted at payment time. It is available for direct employment through Cesu+ and for provider organisations connected to the scheme.

In practice, a 100 EUR service costs you 50 EUR at the moment you pay, with no waiting. Always ask the professional or the structure whether they are connected to it.

What it means for a cleaning budget

Take a common case, based on the indicative rates detailed in our French guide to home cleaning in 2026: two hours of regular cleaning per week at 25 EUR per hour is around 200 EUR per month, or 2,400 EUR per year. If the service sits inside the eligible framework described above, the 50% tax credit brings the real cost down to roughly 100 EUR per month. The 12,000 EUR annual cap corresponds to 1,000 EUR of eligible spending per month, so a standard weekly rhythm stays far below it.

This is plain arithmetic and deliberately indicative: rates vary by city, surface area and the state of the home.

Washer and the tax credit: straight answer

Washer is a marketplace that connects individuals with independent professionals. The tax credit does not depend on the platform: it depends on the legal setup of the service and on the status of the professional who works in your home. Before booking, ask two simple questions: are you registered for personal services, and do you issue an annual tax certificate? If the answer is no, the service is still perfectly legal, but it does not open the right to the tax credit. We would rather write that plainly than let anyone assume an automatic benefit.

FAQ - House cleaning and the French tax credit

How much can I get back on house cleaning in France?

The credit is 50% of your spending, within a 12,000 EUR annual cap, so up to 6,000 EUR per year. The cap can rise by 1,500 EUR per dependent child, per household member over 65 or per ascendant over 65, up to a 15,000 EUR total.

Does a car wash at home qualify for the tax credit?

No. Car washing is not part of the personal services rendered at home listed by the administration. Only home upkeep services such as cleaning fall inside the scheme.

Can I get the immediate advance as a foreign resident in France?

The mechanism depends on the setup, not on your nationality: it is available through Cesu+ for direct employment, or through a provider organisation connected to the scheme. The tax credit share is then deducted when you pay.

Which documents should I keep?

The annual tax certificate issued by the registered provider or organisation, together with the matching invoices. The amounts are declared in the personal services section of your French income tax return.

Is office cleaning covered?

No. Cleaning professional premises is outside the personal services tax credit, which covers services rendered at a private home. It belongs to the client company's accounting.

Choosing the right cleaning professional starts with clarifying the setup: services covered, equipment provided, registered status. Find a verified home cleaning pro near you with Washer and ask those questions from the very first message. You can also read how Washer works or check our pricing.
